THE TEAM

Shift's co-founders, believes those wanting a training service will look for somewhere with exacting standards,

All our trainers are qualified to the highest degree, and we  additionally, look for something different, an edge and experience beyond the classroom, and real experience of what it means to make changes.

We operate and train, covering South West, West and Central London.  We can also accomodate other areas of London with a network of instructors we know and trust.

Meet our SHIFT team and see what makes us tick, squat, push, press, pull, squat, lunge, jump, and laugh...

Wai Cheung

From London to Bali and back again, SHIFT's co-founder is Wai Cheung.

I have a martial arts background, with a 4th Dan Black Belt and TeamGB Kyokushinkai Karate (
British Karate Kyokushinkai) U18 Head Coach with years of dedicated personal training, and 22-year full-contact karate competition career under my belt. I am a level 3 Premier personal trainer and fully qualified STOTT Pilates instructor, and strength and conditioning specialist, with experienced hands-on knowledge in Injuries and Special Populations.

Starting in London, SHIFT came about as a result of years of personal hard training and a desire to be healthier, fitter and stronger, whilst following a sporting background in competitive full-contact karate.  The experiences and knowledge was taken to Bali, Indonesia where Studio Pilates Bali was set up with other partners, and from which a fully equipped functional training and Pilates studio now exists.

On returning to London, SHIFT was born in earnest, with the desire to bring the owners' brand of health, strength, conditioning, fitness and functional training to a personal setting.

Emma Markwell

Emma has been competing in Kyokushinkai Karate tournaments, a full contact fighting discipline, since the age of 16. She still competes regularly and has held titles including World, European and British Champion. Emma is a 3rd Dan black belt.

Years of hard training along with a competitive edge means Emma understands the importance of meeting your goals, and enjoys putting together challenging exercise programmes.

She works with a range of clients from different backgrounds, helping people with anything from weight management and body confidence, to strength and conditioning and flexibility training.

Emma is a member of the Register of Exercise Professionals, and is a qualified Level 3 Personal Trainer. Her other qualifications include Diploma in Clinical Weight Loss, Level 3 Exercise for Older Adults,

Level 3 Ante & Post Natal Exercise, Diploma in Raw Food Nutrition

Kelly Balmer

Kelly holds a degree in sports therapy, and is a qualified personal trainer, yoga teacher and an Advanced STOTT Pilates instructor, with serious pedigree and a exceptional wealth of training knowledge and injury management, and is Shift's co-founder.

For many years she participated in competitive full contact karate tournaments, and attributes the length of her competitive career to a regular Pilates practice which ensured her body was resilient to the stress placed on it by such a demanding sport.

Kelly’s sporting successes, including British Champion, and ranked no.2 in the world, have given her a great insight into what it takes to encourage and motivate her clients. This is reflected in her teaching style which focuses on delivering challenging yet balanced programmes with an emphasis on correct form, core awareness, breath and alignment.
