Alternative manual therapy

Over past few weeks I've set myself some new training goals, switched my programme around and have been reaping the rewards of some consistency. It has however added more stress on my body and as can be expected aches and tightness in specific areas are appearing..

However amongst the training schedule I've also been utilising self myofascial release techniques using a foam roller (see previous article), to address tightness and most recently saw John at the WellnessCentre for a shiatsu session.

Shiatsu is defined as a form of therapy of Japanese origin based on a framework of traditional Chinese medicine, same principles as acupuncture, in which pressure is applied to certain points on the body using the hands.

Having spent the first few minutes ascertaining my condition and specific treatment needs, John set to work.

Unlike other therapies such as deep tissue or sports massages that use oils on bare skin, shiatsu is applied through clothing.

John systematically worked from bottom to top, back and front, on pressure points and junctions in the body, paying more deliberate attention on problem areas. Throughout the treatment , John provided explanation of meridians of the body, how internal organs might be affected by training soreness or indeed daily stresses in our lives.

Treatment lasted one hour and although not as manually invasive as other therapies I certainly felt freer and easier in previous areas of tightness. Over the following hours after treatment and indeed the following day, I felt more balanced...

As with any well rounded training programme, strength and conditioning, cardiovascular, and mobility and movement work to improve or maintain a general healthy condition is important.

The addition of manual therapies like deep tissue massage and shiatsu, aids a more holistic approach to health and wellbeing and helps in alleviating stresses that modern day life can bring.

For those wishing to try shiatsu and any other massage therapies offered by John and his team, the Wellness Centre is located at Fybre Fitness Hub, on Northcote Road, Clapham Junction; open every day of the week from 7am to 9pm.

Even better than that, anyone who books in a 60 minute Wellness Massage will get it for £10 rather than £55 for their first visit if they input WAI in the promotion field. You can sign up on their website (www.thewellnesscentre.com) and book in using our online calendar.
